PROF.

VINCENZO FIORE

Vincenzo Fiore is Associate Professor in Material Science and Technology (IMAT-01/A) at the Department of Engineering, University of Palermo. He graduated with honors in Material Engineering from the University of Messina in July 2004, with a thesis on "Numerical and experimental investigation of the bearing behavior of fiber reinforced composite materials". He earned a PhD in “Economic analysis, technological innovation and management for territorial development policies” from the University of Palermo in April 2008, with a thesis on "Innovative technologies for the manufacturing of composite structures in the nautical field". He held a post-doctoral grant funded by the University of Palermo from 2008 to 2012 on the topic: “Metal-composite joints for nautical applications: structural adhesives and surface treatments”. He was a Research Fellow (from 2012 to 2016) and an Assistant Professor (from 2017 to 2020) at the University of Palermo.

  • His research interests lie in the science and technology of materials, focusing on several key areas:
  • Manufacturing of composite materials based on thermoplastic and thermoset polymers;
  • Assessment of mechanical behavior and damage mechanisms of composite materials;
  • Thermo-mechanical and impact characterizations of composite materials;
  • Development of materials obtained from renewable resources;
  • Extraction and testing of novel natural fibers for reinforcement in both polymeric and cementitious composites;
  • Manufacturing and testing of adhesive, mechanical, and mixed joints between similar and dissimilar materials (e.g., metal-to-composite, glass-to-metal, glass-to-composite);
  • Development and testing of innovative, eco-friendly materials with enhanced insulating and mechanical properties;
  • Evaluation of the durability of both traditional and innovative materials in harsh or aggressive environments.

He is currently leading two collaborative research projects at national level. He has authored or co-authored 83 publications in international, ISI peer-reviewed journals and holds 2 patents. His H-index is currently 38, and his publications have received about 5,000 citations (source: Scopus). Additionally, he has co-authored 5 book chapters and presented at more than 30 conferences, seminars, and invited lectures. Throughout his academic career, he has supervised or co-supervised over 60 Master's theses and has over ten years of teaching experience. He serves as a referee for many international ISI journals and is a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Natural Fibers (ISSN: 1544-0478), Applied Composite Materials (ISSN: 1573-4897), Polymers (ISSN: 2073-4360), Fibers (ISSN: 2079-6439), and Journal of Composites Science (ISSN: 2504-477X).
